In our opinion, the brooch is a severely undervalued piece of jewelry. A beautifully made brooch is a true work of art. The brooch is a piece of jewelry that, if you wear it properly, can be an addition to your outfit.
History of the brooch
The brooch goes back to several centuries before the current era. The Romans already wore the brooch in the form of a cloak pin (Fibula). This way the clothes could be draped well around the body and the pin was fastened on the shoulder. The button only became the “replacement” for this pin much later.
The materials used depended on the wealth of the man or woman in question, although it must be said that the person who wore these types of pins was never really among the poorest Romans. Gold, silver and bronze were used and often passed down as heirlooms.
Brooches of today
Where you saw many ladies walking around with a brooch at the beginning of the last century, you see that it is currently less fashionable. Large jewelry houses such as Maboussin, Van Cleef & Arpel, Cartier and Bucellati had entire workshops dedicated to making decorative brooches. The brooch gave the goldsmith and designer much more artistic freedom compared to rings, necklaces and earrings. A brooch could be made larger and heavier than other jewellery, and there was also more possible with the shape of the jewellery.
How to wear?
According to etiquette, a brooch should be worn on the left, but many women like it better on the right and that is of course also possible.
It is more important to find matching jewelry when wearing the brooch. Too much jewelry can create a Christmas tree effect. If you don't come out well, then stand in front of the mirror with everything on it and remove something every time. In the end you see what works best for you.
